10 Lessons on Growth I’d Tell My 20-Year-Old Self About Work & Careers

I became a fitness instructor at 24 by accident—not by planning, not by following a structured career path.

I won a costume contest.

That win came with a free gym membership, which led to me falling in love with group fitness. A few months later, I was taking every class I could. A year later, I was leading them. And for the next 10 years, I taught fitness professionally.

At the time, I thought I had found my purpose. But looking back, I realize it was never just about fitness. It was about:

✔️ Teaching
✔️ Inspiring growth
✔️ Helping people transform

Fast forward to today—I still do the same thing. Except now, instead of helping people transform their bodies, I help them transform their mindsets.

That journey taught me a few powerful lessons about career growth, personal development, and how work really works.

Here’s what I’d tell my 20-year-old self about work & careers

1. Say yes to unexpected opportunities

You never know where they’ll lead. Your next career move might be hiding in the most random moment.

2. Follow what energizes you, not just what’s practical

That’s where your real career path is hiding. Pay attention to what lights you up!

3. Your job title will change, but your purpose won’t

Look for patterns in what excites you—your core strengths will carry across every role.

4. No one has it all figured out in their 20s (or 30s, or 40s…)

Stop stressing about “the plan.” Careers are built through action, not overthinking.

5. Pay attention to small ‘moments’

Often, the smallest decisions lead to the biggest career shifts.

6. Build skills, not just resumes

What you learn now—whether soft skills or technical expertise—will show up in ways you don’t expect.

7. Who you surround yourself with matters

Mindset matters! Surround yourself with people who challenge and expand your thinking.

8. Your energy is your greatest asset

Success isn’t just about time management. Learn how to manage your energy, motivation, and recovery.

9. Keep evolving

Every chapter prepares you for the next, even when you can’t see it yet. Growth comes from discomfort.

10. Trust the process

If you follow what excites you, you’ll end up exactly where you’re meant to be. Careers aren’t linear—embrace the journey.

The Big Takeaway? Careers Aren’t Linear.

We don’t always know what’s next—and that’s okay. Success comes from the skills you build, the experiences you embrace, and the moments you say yes to.

So instead of worrying about whether you’re on the right path, start paying attention to what excites you. That’s where the magic happens.

Action Step:

Think about the one piece of career advice you’d give to your younger self. Now, share it with someone who needs to hear it.
